How to prevent motorcycle helmet hair

Motorcycle helmet hair can be reduced by protecting your hair before you ride. Using low hairstyles, braids, or a breathable barrier like a neck tube or balaclava. The key is minimising friction, sweat, and movement inside the helmet. With the right method, you can keep your hair smoother, cleaner, and easier to refresh after every ride.

    What causes motorcycle helmet hair?

Helmet hair happens when friction, heat, and pressure build up inside your helmet.

When you ride, three main factors affect your hair:

    • Friction: Constant rubbing against helmet lining causes frizz and breakage
    • Sweat & heat: Traps moisture, leading to flat or greasy hair
    • Compression: Flattens volume and creates awkward bends

Understanding this helps answer a key question many riders ask: how do I stop my hair from getting flat under a motorcycle helmet?

How can you prevent helmet hair before riding?

The best way to prevent motorcycle helmet hair is to prepare your hair before putting your helmet on.

Small adjustments can make a big difference:

    • Choose low, flat hairstyles
    • Reduce loose strands
    • Add a protective layer between hair and helmet

These simple changes help reduce friction and maintain your hairstyle longer.

Which hairstyles work best under a motorcycle helmet?

    1. Low Bun, ponytail or flat styles

If you have medium to long hair, keep it low and close to your neck.

    • A low ponytail or sleek bun reduces movement
    • A plait at the nape prevents tangling
    • Avoid high styles that create pressure points

    2. Two-sided braids (plaits)

Braiding your hair into two flat plaits helps:

    • Reduce tangles and knots
    • Prevent breakage during longer rides
    • Distribute pressure evenly

Keep them flat to avoid discomfort under the helmet.

    Practical experience

On long summer rides through the Alps, wearing a lightweight balaclava made a noticeable difference: less frizz, less grease, and significantly easier hair touch-ups after removing the helmet.

I rode my motorcycle in temperatures over 30 degrees. I was hot and sweaty.
ONLY my head stayed pleasantly cool under my new under helmet. Neither the inside of the helmet nor my scalp were damp. It was an amazing feeling!

I never would have expected that, and since that trip, I never ride without the balaclava from Linda-Jean.

    1. I am 72 years old and my hair has gotten quite thin, what can I use or what can I do to keep my hair from looking so so flat? lol I look terrible with super flat hair lol I need some help lol your suggestions would be most appreciated.!!!

      1. Thank you so much for your comment and, don’t worry, you’re definitely not alone in this! 😊
Honestly, there’s no magic solution that completely eliminates helmet hair (I wish there was!), but there are a couple of things that can really help make it less bad (or more bearable).
First, a well-fitted, snug balaclava is your best friend. It creates a smooth barrier between your hair and the helmet lining, which significantly reduces friction and the frizz that comes with it.
Second, if your hair length allows for it, try plaiting from the top of your head rather than just at the nape.
This hairstyle is the only one that lets me look presentable even after a whole day on the motorbike.
Note: It took me a bit of practice to get the hang of it, but it works.
Hope this helps, and happy riding!
